Make money from your Blog - Widget Bucks

WidgetBucks is a FREE ad service that allows us to make money from our blogs - similar to Google AdSense.

What's great about WidgetBucks is that right off the bat they give you $25 just for signing up! You can't beat that with a stick.

WidgetBucks differs from Google AdSense in that it offers up “widgets” for products like: electronics, books, health and beauty, etc. It does not crawl your content, but it is customizable and they even recently fixed some slowness issues - so it looks like they're heading in the right direction.

Unlike Google AdSense, you only need to make $50 to get paid (AdSense is $100). Payments are expected to arrive in 45 days (keyword: expected - we'll all know if WidgetBucks is the real deal come December). And they already start you off with $25 just for signing up - so you're half way there!

Some of the sites in their network include: Target, Best Buy, and Amazon.com. All early indications point to WidgetBucks becoming a major player in the ad game.

In my next article I will show you how to easily implement WidgetBucks on your Blogger blogs. But for now, head on over and sign up for a FREE account.

FAQ :-
How do I make money from WidgetBucks?

You earn money each time someone clicks on a WidgetBucks ad widget on your site, also called pay-per-click, or PPC. You can also earn money by referring people to WidgetBucks.

How do I get started?

Getting started with WidgetBucks is a simple 1-2-3 process. First, sign-up. Second, configure your widgets with our easy publishing system. Third, paste the code into your blog or Web page, or use our integration with popular blog platforms such as TypePad, Blogger and WordPress. If you want to change or update your WidgetBucks widgets in the future, simply sign in and go to My Widgets.

How much do I make?

How much you earn depends largely on your site's traffic and content. A number of publishers who have tested WidgetBucks are seeing a $3-6 CPM.

How often do I get paid?

We send out checks for all revenue earned within 45 days after the end of each month, as long as you've earned a minimum of $50. For example, if you signed up for WidgetBucks in October, you would receive your first commission payment within 45 days of Oct. 31, approximately mid December.

How does Mpire know where to send my check?

Simply select "Check" as your preferred payment method and complete the Payee information on your "My Settings" page. As a reminder, we have a strictly enforced Privacy Policy.

What is MerchSense?

MerchSenseâ„¢ is Mpire's patent-pending contextual algorithm engine. It detects and analyzes the content of your website or blog to determine what product offers are most relevant to your audience. If you choose the MerchSense option when creating a new widget, simply place the code on your site and let MerchSense automatically provide the most appropriate ad content. MerchSense evaluates your editorial information daily, so, as your content changes, WidgetBucks will dynamically offer the highest-yielding products.

Do you have a bonus program?

Yes. When you sign-up with WidgetBucks, you'll automatically receive a $25 bonus into your account to get the ball rolling. This means you are half way to your first payout with WidgetBucks. Read our Terms & Conditions for all the details.

Do you have a referral program? How much does it pay?

Yes. When you refer a new WidgetBucks user, you will receive a 10 percent referral fee based on the commissions earned by the people you refer. You'll receive this 10 percent for the full 12 months after the new member joins. Your referral fees will be credited to your account and paid monthly, along with your commission payout. So, if you refer someone, and they make $100 in commissions, we pay you $10; if they make $1,000, we pay you $100. This continues for a whole year on all the commissions they earn. The Referral/Bonus page has details on the Bonus and Referral Program. When you are logged-in, go to the Referral Tools page to grab referral ads. You will soon see a "Grab this Widget" link on all widgets for viral distribution, which includes your referral information.

Note that the cookie used to identify those you refer lasts for 30 days after they click on a referral link.

Can I place more than one WidgetBucks ad on my site?

Yes, there is no limit to how many you can place on your site.

Can I run WidgetBucks with Google AdSense?

Yes, WidgetBucks is compatible with all other ad systems.

Can I post a widget to my blog or publishing platform?

In many cases, a blogging/publishing platform will not allow the user to directly edit/enter HTML directly and/or there are restrictions on including javascript within a post. In these cases, you will not be able to place a widget in a post, but you may be able to add the widget to the sidebar. Sidebars are provided by nearly all blogging/publishing platforms, and they typically support HTML/Javascript. For example, WordPress does not allow certain types of accounts to add Javascript. Blogspot and Typepad are examples of platforms that allow you to place the widget code directly in a blog post and/or in the sidebar. Widgetbucks currently has direct integration with Blogger and Typepad to add the widget directly to a sidebar. You can also copy/paste the HTML code directly into a blog post on these platforms. Wordpress is also a very popular blogging platform, but has some specific WordPress steps that must be followed to support javascript within your post. As a rule, if your platform allows you to directly edit HTML, you should be able to post a widget.

How frequently do my Impressions, Clicks, and Revenue statistics update?

Impression and click counts are updated hourly. Revenue reporting occurs within 72 hours. At the bottom of the My Widgets report view we state how current the revenue reporting is. After a couple of days of revenue information, you can calculate a rough estimate of how much your site is earning.

Can I put WidgetBucks on my site if I'm not based in the US?

Yes, as long as the site meets the terms of service. Please be aware that our terms of service does not allow non-english sites without prior written consent. Widgetbucks can be placed on any site that has traffic. Because all of the products are from US based merchants and are in US dollars, the likelihood of click conversion is greater for a US targeted audience, but you can still use WidgetBucks on Non-U.S. based sites.

Does it matter what type of site I have to use Widgetbucks?

As long as the site meets the terms of service, you can use ads on any kind of site or pages you are looking to monetize. We've seen our shopping widgets be effective on specific product blogs, entertainment sites, or even local search engines. Try out a few different widgets and see what works best for your customers, but regardless, you'll be making money! We have noticed that well-placed, contextual WidgetBucks ads can yield over very high eCPM, in many cases over $6 eCPM. Location of the ad is important - this is not a CPM ad, so it needs to be "above the fold" and if you are selecting a specific content category, be sure it applies to your site content. Otherwise, use the MerchSense option and it will snap content to your page automatically based on page content and demographics. Sites that are pornographic in nature, non-english sites, and/or ad-only sites are examples of sites that are not allowed by the Terms of Service.

Connect Google Talk With Yahoo! or Windows Live Messenger

Posted: 14 Nov 2007 10:46 AM CST

Yahoo! Messenger and MSN (Windows Live) Messenger users can chat with each other easily without changing clients. Similarly, Google is working with AOL to allow users of Google Talk connect with their AIM buddies.

Now consider a completely different scenario - how do Google Talk users talk to their friends who are using Windows Live or Yahoo! Messenger ?

Here’s a a possible solution to make voice-over IP calls between Google Talk, MSN/Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger for free.

1. If you are on Google Talk and want to voice chat with someone on Yahoo!, add service@gtalk2voip.com as your Gtalk friend and then send the following message to your new buddy:

CALL xyz@yahoo.com [use your friends Yahoo! ID instead of xyz]

2. If you are on Yahoo! Messenger and want to connect with a Google Talk user, add gtalk2voip@yahoo.com to your Yahoo! buddy list and send the following message:

CALL xyz@gmail.com [use your friends Google Talk ID instead of xyz]

Writing effective articles in HTML

Running a blog community as well as a multiple sites that involve people submitting articles has taught me one thing: most people do not know how to use word processors or web editors correctly.

Programs like Word, Expression, DreamWeaver make it relatively easy for people to communicate with words very effectively provided that you know how to use them.

Today, I'm going to write a brief set of rules on communicating effectively on the Internet.

Rule 1: Use Tags

If you find yourself selecting a line of text, making it bold and making it larger to indicate that it is some sort of header, stop. Don't do that. You just cause everyone pain by doing that. Instead, use header tags.

Use tags such as heading 1, 2, etc. to make headers.

By using header tags, your document will automatically be supported by any future effort to use the table of contents tools. Moreover, if you decide to switch fonts, you just have to modify the header tag. But the big reason they're important is due to the nature of the web -- if you post something to the web using header tags, they will tend to be supported. By contrast, if you simply change your font to bold and change the size, the result may not look right when you post it on-line.

Rule2: Avoid using Microsoft Word for web documents

I hate to say this but Microsoft Word sucks for writing web documents that are going to go on-line. It's particularly true if you're writing something that is going to be submitted to a site via a web form of some kind (i.e. like when you write an article on WinCustomize.com).

Even if you select "Web Filtered" in Word, to save, you still end up with an HTML file with a bunch of custom class names in it that may interfere with the CSS of the website. Use Front Page or Dream Weaver or some simple HTML editor. You don't need to write it in HTML literally, just write it in a rich editor that saves it as pure HTML if you can.

Rule 3: If you use Tables, use them right

If you find yourself using a table as part of your document, then make it look like a table too.

For example, which of the following is more aesthetically pleasing?

Example 1:

Magic Weather for DesktopX
by Stardock Design

The Magic Weather is the result of a great deal of time and effort put in by the entire team to create a really cool looking weather widget. It uses data from Acuweather to display the current weather conditions as well as a 5 day forecast.

Example 2:

Magic Weather for DesktopX
by Stardock Design

The Magic Weather is the result of a great deal of time and effort put in by the entire team to create a really cool looking weather widget. It uses data from Acuweather to display the current weather conditions as well as a 5 day forecast.

Example 1 is how most tables I see posted by users on-line. But doesn't't example 2 look a lot better? If it's a table, make it look like a table. Put a border around it. To do that, you make a table, and give it a border and then put another table with columns inside. It doesn't't really take any longer.

In addition, control the size of your tables. If you're showing images that are say 240 pixels wide, then decide precisely how big you want your text to be. Don't rely on percentages. Give it a pixel size if you can.

Rule4: Using Thumbnails

I'm amazed how often people will simply use a full sized image that they force size down.

Which of these looks better?

Image where the user simply sizes the full-sized image in HTML. Will typically link to larger image.

Separate thumbnail created for smaller image, links to larger image.

You may also have noticed that I put my screenshots inside of a box. Since I made the entire background a contrasting color to the background of the page, I didn't need to put a border around it. When writing for the web, it's important to break up your writing into bite sized chunks visually.

Rule 5: Using Bullet Points and Number Lists

If you're going to put together any sort of list, use bullet points or numbers. What I mean by that is to use the actual web versions of these.

Example 1: Manual number list

I have 5 things I have to do today:

1) Get up
2) Bathe
3) Eat
4) Work
5) Sleep

Example 2: Using HTML based numbering:

I have 5 things I have to do today:

  1. Get up
  2. Bathe
  3. Eat
  4. Work
  5. Sleep

Little things like indentions help break up the text and make it easier to read.

  • Family
  • Religion
  • Friendship

Those are the demons you must slay if you want to succeed in business.

Conclusions

Writing for the web does require some adjustment. But with a little practice, you can create articles that are both visually appealing as well as intellectually stimulating.

One final tip about the Stardock sites like JoeUser.com and WinCustomize.com -- if you write your article on another server, completely with images, save it, load it in a web browser, copy and paste it into the GUI editor on a Stardock site, the Stardock site will automatically put in the image paths into the HTML for you which can save quite a bit of work.

How to Find and Repair Dead pixels in your Flat screen Monitor

Anatomy of dead pixels

Faulty pixels appear as black or colored dots on an all-white background. In addition, some pixels can stay in a permanently "turned-on" state (this is more common than dead pixels), resulting in a white, red, green, or blue pixel on an all-black background.

There are 3.9 million sub-pixels (red, green and blue) on a standard 1280x1024 LCD monitor, each of these a microscopic transistor. While the defective rate of pixels on LCD panels and plasma displays is very low, due to the large number of sub-pixels, manufacturers cannot guarantee 100% error-free panels at an affordable price. To make things more difficult, it is not possible to test any pixels before full assembly of the panel, and fixing any pixels is not possible after assembly.

How can you avoid them?

It is a good practice to check the LCD monitor or plasma display with Dead Pixel Locator before purchasing, although not all vendors allow it. Still, every manufacturer has a dead pixel policy, which you should read carefully. If you find any defective pixels on your new LCD monitor or plasma display during the warranty period, it may qualify for a replacement!

How to find dead pixels

Download Dead Pixel Locator (size: 183kB, freeware), save it to a floppy disk or pendrive, and run it on any Windows computer anywhere. No setup is required. No malware, no spyware.

The application displays homogeneous colors on the monitor. Use the arrow keys to change the colors, and check every part of the screen very carefully for every color. If you find any pixels that have different colors than the background, first make sure that it is not the dust on the surface of the screen. :-) If you cannot wipe it off, that is a defective pixel.

Method to Increase your Browsing Speed

You really need to tweak your browser in case you are using Firefox because it is a browser which has been specially designed for optimized and fast browsing but if you can make it even a little more fast that would certainly be a treat for you. Likewise there is a trick to make Internet Explorer 6 fast too. Browsers are designed to work with fast connections but with this trick even dial-up users can experience fast and smooth browsing.

Optimize Firefox and IE Browsing Speed

I shall be teaching you two tricks which work separately on Firefox and Internet Explorer. It doesn’t require you to be some expert rather all you have to do is change some registry values and you are done. I have also included a video tutorial for those who want to see it step by step visually. This is perhaps one of the oldest tricks to optimize Firefox and IE but it still works great.

Trick to Increase Firefox Speed

1. Open firefox and in the address bar write about:config and press enter
2. Double click network.http.pipelining and set it to True
3. Double click network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set value to 10 from 4
4. Right click and create a new string nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0

You are done. Enjoy lightning fast Firefox browsing and now for IE.

Trick to Increase Internet Explorer Speed

Hack yahoo passwords

How to hack yahoo passwords! It is possible and it is easy. This way of hacking into Yahoo email accounts was brought to my attention by a ex-boyfriend of mine who is a bit of a computer wizard. I have tried the method a least a dozen times and it has worked on all but 2 occasions, I don¢t know the reason why it failed a couple of times, but on every other occasion it has got me the password for the requested email address. This is how it is done:

STEP 1- Log in to your own yahoo account. Note: Your account must be at least 2 weeks old for this trick to work.

STEP 2- Once you have logged into your own account, compose/write an e-mail to: protector_p@yahoo.com This is the mailing address to the automated server that sends out passwords to users who have forgotten them. What you are going to do is trick the server into thinking that it is sending your password to you but it will send you the pass for the account you are trying to hack instead.

STEP 3- In the subject line type exactly: password retrieve

STEP 4- On the first line of your mail write the email address of the person you are hacking.

STEP 5- On the second line type in the e-mail address you are using.

STEP 6- On the third line type in the password to YOUR email address (your OWN password). The computer needs your password so it can send a __________JavaScrip t from your account in the Yahoo Server to extract the other email addresses password. This works because you are sending your password to a machine not a person. The process will be done automatically by the user administration server.

STEP 7- The final step before sending the mail is, type on the fourth line the following code exactly: cgi-bin/$et76453as&pwrsa The password will be sent to your inbox in a mail called "System Reg Message" from "System. Usually within 1 day. When my ex showed me how to do this I thought it was too good a trick to keep to myself! Just try and enjoy!

Repairing Windows XP in Eight Commands

Most of us have seen it at one time or another; perhaps on our own PC, the PC of a loved one, or perhaps a PC at your place of employment. The system spends weeks or months operating in a smooth fashion, taking you to the far reaches of the wide, wibbly web, and after one particularly late evening of browsing and gaming, you shut your PC off and go to bed. Millions of people across the globe do just this every night, but a few of us have turned our PCs on the next day not to the standard Windows XP loading screen, but instead this dreaded error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32 \\CONFIG\ \SYSTEMYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setupusing the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'R' at the first screen to start repair.
Which renders your PC inaccessible from the standard boot procedures of Windows XP. You try safe mode, to no avail. You're particularly savvy and try issuing the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR commands in the Windows recovery console, but after each reboot, you're merely greeted with the same obnoxious and terrifying blue screen of death that's preventing you from accessing your precious data.
Perhaps you've also seen these error screens:
Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt:
X:\\WINNT\\System32 \\Ntoskrnl .exe ____________ _____
Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt:
X:\\WINNT\\System32 \\HAL.dll ____________ _____
NTLDR is MissingPress any key to restart ____________ _____
Invalid boot.iniPress any key to restart
Get to the Windows Recovery Console for your particular Windows installation, navigate to the root letter of your installation ( C: in most cases), issue eight commands, and reboot. The cornerstone of this process is a command called "BOOTCFG /Rebuild" which is a complete diagnostic of the operating system loaded into the recovery console; the purpose of the command is to remove/replace/ repair any system files that were preventing the operating system from loading correctly. Amongst the files it fixes are:
Windows Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
Corrupt registry hives (\\WINDOWS\\ SYSTEM32\ \CONFIG\ \xxxxxx)
Invalid BOOT.INI files
A corrupt NTOSKRNL.EXE
A missing NT Loader (NTLDR)
The command process may apply to other types of blue screens or Hive/HAL/INI/ EXE/DLL-related stop errors, but I have not had the luxury of computers in this type of disrepair. The process I am about to outline is virtually harmless, and if you feel you may be able to correct your PC's boot-time blue screens and stop errors with the sequence, feel free to try.
Let us now begin with a step-by-step instruction for correcting these issues.
Getting to the Windows Recovery Console
Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD. Configuring your computer to boot from CD is outside of the scope of this document, but if you are having trouble, consult Google for assistance.
Once you have booted from CD, do not select the option that states: "Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool." You're going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the " R" key to enter the recovery console:

After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (Typically number " 1"). Select the installation number, (As mentioned, "1" in most cases), and hit enter. If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit enter. You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

Continue to page 2 to proceed with the repair functions.
Proceeding With the Repair Functions
There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair any of the issues I noted in the opening of this guide. I will introduce them here, and then show the results graphically in the next six steps. These commands are as follows:
C: CD ..
C: ATTRIB -H C:\\boot.ini
C:ATTRIB -S C:\\boot.ini
C:ATRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
C: del boot.ini
C: BOOTCFG /Rebuild
C: CHKDSK /R /F
C: FIXBOOT
To "Go up a directory" in computing is to revert back to the directory above the current folder you're operating in. If, for example, I'm in the C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32 directory, and I want to get at a file in the WINDOWS directory, I would merely type CD .. and I would be taken out of the SYSTEM32 folder and up one level to WINDOWS. We're going to do the same thing here from the WINDOWS folder to get to the basic root of C:

Now that we are at C: we can begin the process of repairing the operating system and that begins with modifying the attributes of the BOOT.INI file. Briefly, BOOT.INI controls what operating systems the Windows boot process can see, how to load them, and where they're located on your disk. We're going to make sure the file is no longer hidden from our prying eyes, remove the flag that sets it as an undeletable system file, and remove the flag that sets it as a file we can only read, but not write to. To do this, we will issue three commands in this step:
C:ATTRIB -H C:\\BOOT.INI
C:ATTRIB -R C:\\BOOT.INI
C:ATTRIB -S C:\\BOOT.INI
to remove the Hidden, System and Read Only flags.

Now that we've modified the attributes for the BOOT.INI file, it's up for deletion. The syntax for it is simple: { DEL FILE NAME }, e.g., C:DEL BOOT.INI deletes the BOOT.INI file.

Now for the most important step of our process, the BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors. It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things: First, every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as an OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing. Secondly, if you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel's XD or AMD's NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option. I will demonstrate both commands for the purpose of this guide, but do not set NOEXECUTE as a load option if you do not own one of these CPUs. For the "Enter Load Identifier" portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed. If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" for the identifier. This gives the process some authenticity, if you're keen on being a perfectionist.

This step verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it's still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit. No screenshot necessary here! Just type CHKDSK /R /F at the C:> prompt. Let it proceed; it could take in excess of 30 minutes on slower computers, when this is finished move on to the seventh and final step.
This last step also requires no screenshot. When you are at the C:> prompt, simply type FIXBOOT. This writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are " Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ?" just hit "Y," then enter to confirm your decision.
Results and Wrap-Up
It's time to reboot your PC by typing EXIT in the Windows Recovery Console and confirming the command with a stroke of the enter key. With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed. You've just saved yourself from many hours of work, frustration, potential data loss and shelling out your hard-earned greenbacks at a brick'n'mortar operation.
Keep in mind that this solution is only designed to resolve the issues introduced in the preface if the cause is unrelated to spyware and viruses If you believe your PC has affected one of these symptoms due to spyware or viruses, today's fastest-growing PC nuisance, please do a removal and repair
